We are using a 100-pound pool sand filter with a 3/4 hp pool pump. The pump is on a timer, so it runs a half hour, 3 times a day. We haven't had any problems using pool sand (more coarse than play sand), and back washing the filter once every 1-2 weeks.

1. We used about 2.5 feet of leftover 4" drainpipe to make a cover for the 1 1/2" pump intake. |

2. Both ends of the drainpipe are cut about 4" in and it is riveted together at one end. Many extra holes we melted into the plastic for more flow. |

3. Some holes were also drilled into the end of the vacuum hose. A rock was placed in the end of the drainpipe to weight it down in the water. |

4. We later used some stiff copper wire to hold the rock at the one end, and the smaller hose centered in the larger hose.(not shown) |

5. A hose clamp was used to finish it off. |
Currently, we are running a bubbler full-time in the pond. We have tentative plans for making bio-filter powered with a small, low wattage pond pump for aeration and waste break down. Some kind of small waterfall would be nice too.
